Now the “metaverse” is blowing up as a buzzword - decades after its first appearance in science fiction - with a major boost from Facebook, now renamed Meta. But what does the metaverse actually mean - especially for music?

Chris Howard, CEO of The Rattle, is one of the few visionaries in creative tech who can explain that in clear, informed, and imaginative terms. He uses our tech here at Patch as an illustration of where this whole juggernaut is going. In the metaverse, Howard explains, music is “sound for the purpose of altering someone’s mood or behavior. - it’s more purely art.” He even compares it - unexpectedly, probably - to classical music. As he puts the goal: “I want someone to sit in an audience and feel like they’re on another planet. That to me is classical music in a nutshell.”

And if you’re exhausted by boredom with music as a sort of fame-driven brand identity, this is your ticket to a new direction. “In the metaverse, none of that applies,” Howard says. “an entirely new breed of music artist or sound artist … will be born from the metaverse.”

Here’s where Patch fits in, in Howard’s view:

There are tech companies like Patch XR making metaverse soundscape tools - a digital audio workstation in the metaverse, so that sound artists can create interactive metaverse soundscapes for anything … They can put it into a game - anywhere they want … It’s early signs of these technologies allowing sound artists to build for the metaverse. But it’s a completely different psychology.
